Two rolls of paint protection film can look identical on a shelf, carry similar thickness callouts, and behave completely differently after three summers on a car bonnet. The difference is almost always in the polymer backbone — specifically whether the TPU is aliphatic or aromatic. Understanding that distinction is the first useful filter when comparing PPF from different suppliers.

Aliphatic vs Aromatic TPU: The Chemistry That Decides Longevity
Thermoplastic polyurethane is built from three blocks: a long-chain polyol, a diisocyanate, and a chain extender. The diisocyanate is where aliphatic and aromatic grades diverge. Aromatic TPU uses an isocyanate containing a benzene ring; aliphatic TPU replaces it with a cyclic structure that has no aromatic ring.
That ring matters because it absorbs ultraviolet energy and, over time, breaks down into coloured by-products. This is why aromatic films tend to yellow at the edge first and then across the panel, while aliphatic films hold colour far longer. Both types are legitimate products — the problem is paying aliphatic prices for aromatic material.
Reading a Film Specification Sheet
A complete PPF specification should give values, not adjectives. The table below shows what a properly declared series looks like, using the D Series range as an example.
| Parameter | D1 (Entry) | D3 (Balanced) | D5 (Enhanced) | D7 (Premium) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 6.5±0.2 mil | 7.5±0.2 mil | 8.5±0.2 mil | 9.5±0.2 mil |
| Tensile strength | 23.9 MPa | 29.4 MPa | 29.7 MPa | 31.4 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 240% | 260% | 265% | 280% |
| Max. operating temp. | 116°C | 116°C | 116°C | 116°C |
| Hydrophobic angle | — | — | ≥103° | — |
| Warranty | 5 years | 5 years | 5 years | 5 years |
Note what the ±0.2 mil tolerance means. It is a manufacturing band, not a marketing figure — a nominal 7.5 mil roll may legitimately run from 7.3 to 7.7. When a supplier quotes 7.5 mil with no tolerance and no test method, the number cannot be verified on receipt.
What Tensile Strength and Elongation Actually Predict
These two numbers are usually read together, and reading either alone is misleading.
- Tensile strength indicates how much pull the film withstands before it tears. It correlates with resistance to stone-chip impact and to stretching damage during installation.
- Elongation at break indicates how far the film stretches before failing. Higher elongation helps the film conform to compound curves and deep recesses without thinning or lifting.
- The pair together describes toughness. A film with high strength but low elongation resists impact yet fights the installer on complex bumpers; a film with high elongation but low strength conforms easily but may not absorb impact as well.
Top Coat: Where Self-Healing and Hydrophobicity Live
The base film provides mechanical protection. The top coat provides the surface behaviour customers actually notice. Three capabilities are commonly engineered into it:
- Heat self-healing. Scratches produced with a copper brush on the film surface can be repaired with 60°C hot water. The coating is elastic and reflows when warmed, closing fine marks. This is a real and testable property, but note the qualifier: the test specifies a copper brush and a defined water temperature, and both matter when comparing suppliers.
- Stain resistance. Marker stains can be wiped off with alcohol without leaving marks. This speaks to crosslink density — a denser surface resists ink and dye penetration.
- Hydrophobicity. Measured as a water contact angle. Hydrophobic variants in the range are specified at ≥103°, which produces the beading behaviour that makes washing easier and reduces water spotting.

Ageing, Chemical and Thermal Resistance
Three durability claims deserve particular scrutiny because they are easy to state and harder to prove.
| Claim | What a credible declaration looks like |
|---|---|
| Ageing resistance | No damage after QUV 1000-hour accelerated weathering. Ask which cycle and whether gloss and colour shift were measured, not just visible failure. |
| Chemical resistance | No damage after 30 seconds of carburetor cleaner immersion — an aggressive solvent benchmark that simulates fuel and workshop spills. |
| Thermal resistance | Maximum service temperature 116°C, which sets the safe range for heat-gun installation and for dark panels in strong sun. |
A QUV figure without a duration is meaningless, and a chemical-resistance claim without the solvent name and contact time cannot be reproduced. Both should appear on the specification sheet, not only in conversation.
Material Sourcing and Supplier Verification
Film performance is bounded by the resin it is made from. Aliphatic TPU from established producers such as Covestro and BASF is the reference point for premium ranges, and suppliers who use it normally say so explicitly and can provide resin documentation.
When evaluating a supplier, ask for four things in writing:
- The resin grade and producer, plus the batch traceability link to the delivered rolls
- The full parameter table with tolerances and test methods for each series
- Third-party ageing and chemical test reports, with lab name and date
- The warranty document itself, so exclusions are visible before purchase
